Harry Potter star removed one thing from his diet before 'the weight came off' (2025)

Harry Potter star Timothy Spall has shared his secret to shedding the pounds, attributing his weight loss success to cutting out wine from his diet.

The 68-year-old actor, known for his role as Peter Pettigrew in the beloved film series, which is set to be reimagined as a TV series with a new cast, spoke about his healthier lifestyle choices.

As reported by Richard Eden for the Daily Mail, Timothy credited the elimination of wine as the key factor in his weight loss journey. He remarked: "I wanted to lose weight for a part, so I stopped drinking wine and that regulated my diet."

The actor also noted that after slimming down, he began landing roles that were previously out of reach, and for his latest role, he even had to don a fake belly. Timothy elaborated: "The weight came off and I started to get parts I wouldn't have had before."

He added: "Funnily enough, I'm currently filming a Netflix movie directed by Kate Winslet called Goodbye June where I had to fatten up by wearing a strap-on belly."

Timothy's revelations follow his candid admission about his fears during his battle with leukaemia in the 1990s. In an interview with Saga magazine, he recounted the moment he prayed for survival, primarily for his family's sake, reports Surrey Live.

He disclosed: "I was 39 and we had three kids, and out of the blue I was diagnosed with a life-threatening disease called acute myeloid leukaemia. When I was told I had it, I got down on my knees and asked God to spare me for my family.

"There was a time when they thought I might not make it. The only really unbearable thing was what my family would do if I went? I wouldn't be there to look after them, and that was my job as a husband and father.

"The pain and the horror of what me dying would do to the people I loved was the only unbearable side of it. The rest I could take."

Recounting his journey through the harrowing ordeal, he revealed a pivotal moment when he decided he wouldn't let the cancer defeat him.

He recalled: "One day, between treatments, the doctors had done tests and they thought I'd relapsed. A massive mushroom-type thing had grown in my lung.

"I was about to go and have full body radiation and a bone marrow transplant knowing there were things in my body that'd potentially kill me. That morning, I woke up and thought, sod this, I'm not going to die."

Having triumphed over cancer, Timothy has since enjoyed a successful career in film and television, recently scooping a BAFTA for Best Actor for his performance in The Sixth Commandment.

Reflecting on the win, he confessed to Saga that he hadn't anticipated victory due to Brian Cox's role in Succession. He admitted: "It was my sixth Bafta nomination, and I got used to doing the 'smile', so I thought it was going to be another one of those. When I won it, I was genuinely surprised."
